The dopamine cell

Dopamine-secreting neurocytes

A small population of neurons deep in the brain makes dopamine — the chemical messenger the brain uses to co-ordinate movement, motivation and reward.

What it is

Dopaminergic neurons are nerve cells that manufacture and release dopamine. They are a small minority of the brain’s neurons and they are concentrated in a few specific structures in the midbrain.

From there they send long fibres out to other regions, so a small number of cells can influence a very large area.

What it does in the body

A neuron passes a message to the next cell across a narrow gap called a synapse. When an electrical signal reaches the end of a dopaminergic neuron, it releases dopamine into that gap, and the dopamine binds to receptors on the cell on the other side.

Dopamine is one of the brain’s main modulating signals. The dopamine pathways running to the movement-control circuits of the brain are part of how smooth, intended movement is produced. Other dopamine pathways are central to motivation, to reward, and to learning which actions are worth repeating.

Because dopamine works as a modulator rather than a simple on/off switch, the amount released and the timing of it both matter.
