Epidermal skin cells
The outer layer of skin renews itself completely every few weeks. Keratinocytes are the cells that do it, migrating upward from the base until they become the barrier itself.
What it is
Keratinocytes make up the large majority of the epidermis, the thin outermost layer of skin. They are named for keratin, the tough structural protein they fill themselves with as they mature.
Only the cells in the deepest layer of the epidermis divide. Everything above is the product of those divisions, at successive stages of maturity.
What it does in the body
A keratinocyte is born at the base of the epidermis and then begins a one-way journey upward. As it rises it stops dividing, accumulates keratin, and progressively flattens.
Near the surface it does something remarkable: it deliberately dismantles itself. It loses its nucleus and its organelles and becomes a flat, dead, keratin-packed plate — and in that state it is finally doing its job. Those plates, cemented together by lipids, are what keeps water in and microbes, chemicals and ultraviolet light out.
The whole trip takes roughly four weeks, and the dead cells at the top are shed continuously. The barrier is therefore never old.
